This day was chosen in connection with the adoption of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in 1948. The purpose is to commemorate the victims of the genocide and draw the attention of the world community to the issues of punishment and prevention of the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

Unfortunately, as a result of the policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide carried out by Armenia for many years, our people became victims of serious crimes.

National leader Heydar Aliyev's Decree "On the Genocide of Azerbaijanis" dated March 26, 1998, gave a political and legal assessment of the acts of genocide and declared March 31 as the Genocide Day of Azerbaijanis in order to celebrate all the genocidal tragedies committed against the people of Azerbaijan.
